Prenatal Vitamins - continued - (Nov 15, 2013 update - please read this article with my update and why I stopped taking the prenatal multivitamins and what I still take)
Forgot one more thing why it is good to start on the prenatal vitamins before pregnancy. When I started I had to switch a few brands because some of them caused me a lot of abdominal pain and upset stomach. Something I would not wanted to have to deal with when pregnant.
I currently have two that I am taking. One is liquid - Source of Life Prenatal Liquid, and another is in chews - Nurtition Now Prenatal Gummy Vitamins, for when I travel or am running out of the house in a hurry. I like both and have been taking them for couple of months with no trouble. Both have sufficient dose of Folic Acid.
In May of this year, I have started to take prenatal vitamins. Couple of reasons why I think its a good idea to start on those before you are pregnant.
First, prenatal vitamins contain Folic Acid and according to WebMd Folic Acid is a pregnancy superhero! (http://www.webmd.com/baby/folic-acid-and-pregnancy) Folic Acid is a B vitamin. I first learned of this vitamin when my Husband sat next to a doctor specializing in women's nutrition and asked her for a tip on what I should do to prepare for pregnancy. She said if your wife doesn't do anything else she should take Folic Acid, it's the most important thing for pregnancy. Taking this vitamin before and during pregnancy helps to prevent birth defects of your baby's brain and spinal cord. All experts and pediatricians agree this vitamin is a must. Furthermore, it is recommended to take this vitamin for at least a year before you get pregnant.
Second, it takes at least 21 days to develop a habit so its good to start before you are actually pregnant, even if you don't happen to take it for a year before your pregnancy. Better late than never.
Third, it gives you more energy and makes up for the nutrients that are missing in your diet.
I am getting back into the groove of things, enjoying the second trimester and starting to post more recipies and diary entries.
Here is the diary of my pregnancy, its been going really well and we are super excited about meeting our Baby. I am still getting all of the pictures from our European vacation onto my computer and will be continuously uploading them to the travel section.
