In my “naturalizing” process of making everything I eat, put on my skin and my home organic or as natural as possible, I have been trying various natural deodorants after learning that regular deodorants contain aluminum and other ingredients that have been linked to breast and lymph cancers and other diseases and general body toxicity.
I’ve tried the very inexpensive ones like Crystal (which is still my favorite from commercial, store-bought deodorants) and Tom’s of Maine, to very expensive $15.00 deodorant (unfortunately I cannot remember its name, I got it from a small boutique in Phoenix, AZ) but it stained all of my Husband’s shirts with, what I believe, bee wax (it was one of the ingredients), bar and powder deodorants from Lush (each had its own pluses but, for me, the minuses were greater) and many many others.
Nothing worked really well, some better than others, but nothing really well. So I decided to make my own. Googled DIY recipies for natural deodorant and stopped at this recipe (it was simple and I already had all of the ingredients in my kitchen) :
¼ cup of organic non aluminum baking soda
¼ cup of organic tapioca starch (arrowroot or cornstarch can be used)
5 drops of pure sweet orange essential oil (any essential oil you like, I will be trying lavender for the next batch)
5 tbs of organic cold pressed vergin coconut oil.
Mix baking soda with starch. On slow heat mix baking soda/starch with coconut oil and continue mixing to allow coconut oil to melt completely and mix with other ingredients. Turn off heat and add essential oil. Pour into empty deodorant case, a cupcake wrapper or a small jar.
Because coconut oil melts at 24°C /76° F, the deodorant will go between thick paste to solid depending on your room temperature.
Please note, there is no such thing as natural antiperspirant, so this deodorant will not stop your sweating but it will kill the bacteria preventing any unpleasant smell.
Enjoy and please share the recipe with friends!
I am getting back into the groove of things, enjoying the second trimester and starting to post more recipies and diary entries.
Here is the diary of my pregnancy, its been going really well and we are super excited about meeting our Baby. I am still getting all of the pictures from our European vacation onto my computer and will be continuously uploading them to the travel section.
