RTE 2.4 million people have downloaded a free app to help them learn to be more mindful of their health, with 1.5 million of them now using it.
The app, called Yoga: The Mindful Health Project, was launched by UK-based yoga teacher, and former BBC Sport presenter, Professor Peter Hoare to encourage the use of mindful health practices.
It comes at a time when the health of the UK is in serious crisis, with the obesity epidemic threatening to derail public health efforts.
Professor Hoare said: “I believe the yoga industry is incredibly important to the health and wellbeing of the whole population and to the UK’s future.”
The Yoga app gives people the chance to learn to feel good and to get better.
“It’s a great way to get a sense of how to be a better yogi.”
He said the app helped him to focus on what really matters in his practice, such as mindful breathing and a “soulful routine”.
The app has been downloaded more than 4.5m times, with more than a third of those using the free version.
Yoga: The Mastermind, an app designed for teachers and students, has also been downloaded over 4.7m times.
Yogis who download the app will get a free £1,000 credit towards any Yoga membership.
Professor Hoar said:”The yoga app was created to help yoga teachers to better connect with students and to help people understand how yoga is a powerful way to be mindful of health and well-being.”
The app is available on the Apple app store, Google Play and the Amazon app store.
Yoga also has a Facebook page.
Professor James Hirsch, of the University of Reading, said: “I think yoga is one of the best things we can do for ourselves, and I believe the app is a great place to start.”
People have this urge to feel better about themselves, but we need to be aware of the effects of stress, worry and anxiety.
“We can also learn to manage stress better through yoga.”
Professor Hirsch added that there is no doubt that the benefits of yoga are immense.
“Many people have tried yoga for years, and the benefits have been astounding.”
Yoga is a very simple, relaxing way to exercise, and has been shown to help improve heart health and reduce stress.
“I don’t think people realise just how much work it takes to get to the stage where we are physically fit and able to move about the house, even if we are very fit, and that yoga can also help.”
